What if G-d was one of us?

A while ago I go into a discussion with an old jewish friend who now doesn't associate with Jews at all. We started talking about whether God exists or not and why I believe in something that you have to prove but still haven't been able to prove . She strongly believed that God is something we made up a few thousand years ago and believing that praying  is going to help us is completely unnecessary. It is basically just us talking to ourselves and thinking it is going to make life better. As the conversation moved on the obvious argument came up, if there is a God why are there evil people in the world? To be honest I don't have a good answer to any of these questions so I usually end up answering the question with another question. Why should we not believe in God. There is nothing to disprove that God exists and even if it were so, why can't you not believe in something that makes you feel stronger and gives a some kind of hope. It doesn't hurt anyone or aff...

Community confession

I was born and raised as a member of the Jewish Community of Stockholm. As a child I went to the jewish school, took part in many activities and was a frequent synagogue goer. When I reached that age when I had to think about how I wanted my Bat Mitzvah my choice was easy, of course I would do the same thing as my grandfather, my dad and my 3 siblings did, I would do something in the Great Synagogue in Stockholm. However, I considered one of the orthodox synagogues, Adat Jeshurun, my synagogue and I barely went in to the Great Synagogue. The choice was easy for one single reason, tradition. As a grandchild of holocaust survivors my family doesn't have many traditions and it would feel strange not stick to one of the few ones we actually have. This meant me compromising as a 12 year old girl and tell them that I didn't want to have the organ playing or have the microphones. My Bat Mitzvah was one of the last times I set my foot in that synagogue and I know my children won't...

Boxed up sex

We watch a lot of TV in my student house which means that it has become the place where we all gather in the evenings, mostly watching reruns of Come dine with me or Big bang theory but sometimes we also feel like spicing our TV habit up a bit by watching these surprising programs that Channel 4 put on. Whilst Made in Chelsea is strictly forbidden on our TV, programs like Embarrassing bodies and Rudetube are often being watched. Due to this weird range of TV-programs we decided that we were going to try out the new program Sexbox. For you people that haven't seen it the concept is easy, a couple goes into a box and has sex. During this time some so-called Sexperts talk and then the couple comes and discuss the lovemaking. It took me a while to understand why anyone would come up with this idea and waste money on this but during the program they were constantly trying to explain that people don't talk about sex even though it is very natural and that people should dare to talk a...

10 things about summer

I have been in Liverpool for a few hours now and I am soon to start my 3rd and last year of university. This means one thing, summer is over and I need to get back to reality. As usual this is something I've been looking forward to the last month or so but this time I actually feel that I wouldn't mind having summer for a few more months. Not because I don't miss my friends but because I've made so many new friends that I'm now leaving behind. This summer has been the best summer I can remember because of many different reasons. I've had a lot of fun, learnt a lot, got many new friends and enjoyed almost every minute of it. The summer started with an internship for MDA's office in Tel Aviv. I had no expectations at all since my internships I've had before had been kind of crap and I started without having any idea what I was going to do. I quickly learnt that if I was persuasive enough they were willing to accept my ideas but I also had to work for the...

GTA V from another perspective

Last week Grand Theft Auto V was released and every single newspaper I read that day wrote about the game. You could almost say it was the most important happening in the world this week, at least the newspapers made it look like that. Personally I have never played the game and I can't say I understand what purpose the game has and I see it as a waste of time, but then again, who am I to talk when I spend hours playing candy crush. However, this is not one of the problems I have with this game. There are many other things that bugs me. First of all is the way the game is designed for boys (or men but people that play computer games are not real men). The women in the game are either prostitutes or women that rely on men. I'm not one of those who fight for women's rights but I do find this strange. As a girl, I would have liked to be able to play the game as a female character but the creators of this game has made it clear: women are not suppose to play this game and i...

Political correctness

Life isn't fair I've been told repeatedly but at the same time people have taught me to treat everyone the same. "Treat others like you would want to be treated" they have told me and young and naive as I've been I have tried to live like that even though the people around me haven't. I'm that kind of person that do want to help other people and give everyone a chance but sometimes I feel that I should be allowed to think someone's opinion is strange and slightly wrong even though I strongly believe that opinions can't be wrong. Being political correct is something that seems to be more and more important everyday. We aren't allowed to use any words that could be considered offensive or make a joke that someone might find insulting because we need to make sure that everyone is equal. But why do we have to make everyone believe we're equal? After all we all know it's not true and being politically correct won't make us any more eq...

End of a chapter

I started this summer not knowing what I was getting myself into. I was prepared for a summer doing an internship where I could come and go as I wanted and once I was done with the internship I was going to move on to my next project and leave the internship behind and barely look back, like I did with my internship last summer but I soon realised that wasn't what this internship was about. I decided that doing an internship within Magen David Adom's international department would be a good idea since I am a volunteer and MDA is an organisation I care a lot about but I never knew there were so much more to the organisation than the ambulances and blood donations. I quickly realised, by being in their office and discussing important topics about how to make progress within MDA, that there is a lot more I can do as a volunteer than just being in the ambulance. I know it sounds very cliché but it's true, they do need our help and they also want it. The people in the office qui...
