Dr Know-it-all

I am a Media student but not just any media student, I'm a media student with an interest for medicine and I have volunteered in ambulances for over 2 years. By doing this I have seen how paramedics work extremely hard and perform wonders. However, I also have a fair share of friends studying medicine which usually leads to discussions regarding medical care and the differences from working in an ambulance and working in a hospital. Usually I'm met with an interest but sometimes I meet doctors or medicine students believing they are much better than paramedics. This annoys me. A lot. Recently I heard the argument that there should be a doctor in the ambulance to decide if the person actually needs to go to the hospital or not and according to the person who made this argument paramedics are not educated enough to do that because they only study 3 years. The reason why this annoyed me was not because I have friends that are paramedics, it annoyed me because this person had never...

Hypocritical Me

We live in a world where we are constantly told what to think, say and do. Social media feeds us opinions that creates a world where we don't have to make up our minds or even be able to explain why we have our certain opinions. I can't seem to go one single day without seeing a post on Facebook or Twitter about moral issues such as vegetarianism, religion, feminism, peace in the middle east or gay rights. It's turned into a machine that thinks for me and tries to push these ideologies on to me without me even realising that what I'm doing is being a sheep, following the herd. This has created a problem, we all have opinions about everything but they are not our own opinions. As a woman who believe in equal rights but isn't one of those women that keep a poster of Rosie the Riveter in my room, I often get the need to say that I am not a feminist. But then again, I believe in equal rights which pretty much makes me a feminist so why don't I speak up? Why don...

Thanksgivukkah

This year jews around the world (mostly in America) will experience something that only will happen once in our life, thanksgiving will be at the same time as Chanukkah. For me this won't change anything, I will still light my chanukkah candles and give my gifts away and then move on with my life enjoying the atmosphere of friends and family getting together just to relax. One thing that has struck me is how people seem to be obsessed with this coincidence and they have therefore invented a new name for it: Thanksgivukkah. It seems like they've invented a new holiday and are trying to combine these two holidays into one and make the traditions work together but personally I really don't believe they go together if you don't realise what it is that we're actually celebrating and combine them in a valuable way. For me Chanukkah is the holiday when kids get their gifts and compete with each other who got the best gift, even if this is not the purpose of the holida...

What if G-d was one of us?

A while ago I go into a discussion with an old jewish friend who now doesn't associate with Jews at all. We started talking about whether God exists or not and why I believe in something that you have to prove but still haven't been able to prove . She strongly believed that God is something we made up a few thousand years ago and believing that praying  is going to help us is completely unnecessary. It is basically just us talking to ourselves and thinking it is going to make life better. As the conversation moved on the obvious argument came up, if there is a God why are there evil people in the world? To be honest I don't have a good answer to any of these questions so I usually end up answering the question with another question. Why should we not believe in God. There is nothing to disprove that God exists and even if it were so, why can't you not believe in something that makes you feel stronger and gives a some kind of hope. It doesn't hurt anyone or aff...

Community confession

I was born and raised as a member of the Jewish Community of Stockholm. As a child I went to the jewish school, took part in many activities and was a frequent synagogue goer. When I reached that age when I had to think about how I wanted my Bat Mitzvah my choice was easy, of course I would do the same thing as my grandfather, my dad and my 3 siblings did, I would do something in the Great Synagogue in Stockholm. However, I considered one of the orthodox synagogues, Adat Jeshurun, my synagogue and I barely went in to the Great Synagogue. The choice was easy for one single reason, tradition. As a grandchild of holocaust survivors my family doesn't have many traditions and it would feel strange not stick to one of the few ones we actually have. This meant me compromising as a 12 year old girl and tell them that I didn't want to have the organ playing or have the microphones. My Bat Mitzvah was one of the last times I set my foot in that synagogue and I know my children won't...

Boxed up sex

We watch a lot of TV in my student house which means that it has become the place where we all gather in the evenings, mostly watching reruns of Come dine with me or Big bang theory but sometimes we also feel like spicing our TV habit up a bit by watching these surprising programs that Channel 4 put on. Whilst Made in Chelsea is strictly forbidden on our TV, programs like Embarrassing bodies and Rudetube are often being watched. Due to this weird range of TV-programs we decided that we were going to try out the new program Sexbox. For you people that haven't seen it the concept is easy, a couple goes into a box and has sex. During this time some so-called Sexperts talk and then the couple comes and discuss the lovemaking. It took me a while to understand why anyone would come up with this idea and waste money on this but during the program they were constantly trying to explain that people don't talk about sex even though it is very natural and that people should dare to talk a...

10 things about summer

I have been in Liverpool for a few hours now and I am soon to start my 3rd and last year of university. This means one thing, summer is over and I need to get back to reality. As usual this is something I've been looking forward to the last month or so but this time I actually feel that I wouldn't mind having summer for a few more months. Not because I don't miss my friends but because I've made so many new friends that I'm now leaving behind. This summer has been the best summer I can remember because of many different reasons. I've had a lot of fun, learnt a lot, got many new friends and enjoyed almost every minute of it. The summer started with an internship for MDA's office in Tel Aviv. I had no expectations at all since my internships I've had before had been kind of crap and I started without having any idea what I was going to do. I quickly learnt that if I was persuasive enough they were willing to accept my ideas but I also had to work for the...
